This Itinerary starts in Barreirinhas, and brings with it new paths, its proposal to make your immersion deeper, we started the route on the first day at 4 am in Barreirinhas. We visited new places and the traditional oases Baixa Grande and Queimada dos Britos. We finish the route after a kayak descent on the Alegre River, it is about 10km between Betânia and the city of Santo Amaro.
GEOGRAPHY AND LOCATION
OLençóis Maranhenses National Park, has a territorial area of 1,550 square km, is located in three municipalities in the state of Maranhão. Two degrees south of the equator, its territory is divided between the municipalities ofBarreirinhas with 53% of the area, municipality of Santo Amaro with 36% of the area, municipality of Primeira Cruz with 11% of the area. The park was created on June 10, 1981. Its geological age is approximately400,000 thousand years, the desert moves according to the direction of the wind, from East to West, somewhere between 10 and 50 meters per year. Its lagoons come from the rain that floods the Maranhão water table. Between May and June, some lagoons reach extremely high water levels, which causes the dune barriers to break, creating a burst of running water that heads towards the ocean, thus ending the life and beauty of some flooded regions. . The organism is ephemeral and provides us with different landscapes at different times throughout the year.
ABOUT THE LOCAL CLIMATE
Due to our proximity to the equator, around 300km to the south, we do not have a wide range of temperatures, during the day around 33° degrees, during the night around 27° degrees. It rains between January and May, strong winds between July and November.
BEST TIME TO DO THIS TOUR
This itinerary visits different sides of the park, which means it can be done all year round, as we will always be accessing large lagoon basins. And kayaking on the last day of Rio Alegre is viable all year round.

The expedition starts at 4 am, with the team picking up all participants at their accommodation, then the trail that takes us to the starting point, breakfast served, before starting the walk. Our stretch is about 12km, between Lagoa Bonita and the village of Mucambo. Along the way there are lagoons and wild landscapes. After lunch time, a short walk around the village and visiting lakes and strategic places to watch the sunset. Free night.
