The tour was included in the official list of attractions of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in 2019. Since then, we have pooled our knowledge and decided to offer our audience a different experience, a contemplative visit, where our participants can enjoy two great moments of our destination. The sunset on the dunes, with the view of the crystal clear lagoons and the arrival of the night sky. All accompanied by a responsible team, committed to transmitting relevant information about our region.
GEOGRAPHY AND LOCATION
The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, has a territorial area of 1,550 square km, is located in three municipalities in the state of Maranhão. Two degrees south of the equator, its territory is divided between the municipalities of Barreirinhas with 53% of the area, the municipality of Santo Amaro with 36% of the area, and the municipality of Primeira Cruz with 11% of the area. The park was created on June 10, 1981. Its geological age is around 400,000 years, the desert moves according to the direction of the wind, from East to West, somewhere between 10 and 50 meters per year. Its lagoons come from the rain that floods the Maranhão water table. Between May and June, some lagoons reach very high water levels, which causes the dune barriers to break, creating a burst of running water that heads towards the ocean, thus ending the life and beauty of some flooded regions. . The organism is ephemeral and provides us with different landscapes at different times throughout the year.
ABOUT THE LOCAL CLIMATE
Due to our proximity to the equator, about 300km to the south, we do not have a wide range of temperatures, during the day around 33° degrees, during the night around 27° degrees. It rains between January and May, strong winds between July and November.
BEST TIME TO DO THIS TOUR
This tour can be best enjoyed between the months of July and October, when there is no rain and clear skies without clouds. For photographers, between July and August the Milky Way is in the south, creating a good angle for photography.

The tour begins with the Costa Leste team, picking up participants at 4 pm at their accommodation. The tour can be taken from the city of Santo Amaro do Maranhão, the city of Barreirinhas or the village of Atins.
Over the dunes, we enjoyed the sunset, then accompanied by the East Coast tour leader, we observed the transformation of the night sky and the emergence of stars, planets and constellations. Always accompanied by lots of information and a good table of cold cuts and drinks organized by our team. Return time is 8:30 pm.
