Traditional 3-Day Crossing

The traditional route has its charm, visiting the Preguiças river, Pequenos Lençóis, Atins, Baixa Grande and Queimadas dos Britos. The intercalation of biomes on this three-day trip is inexplicable. Three light days, 36km in total of walking. The itinerary visits the primitive area where the oases are located. It ends in Betânia, in Lagoa do Cajueirinho with a transfer to  the city of Santo Amaro do Maranhão.

  

GEOGRAPHY AND LOCATION 

OLençóis Maranhenses National Park, has a territorial area of 1,550 square km, is located in three municipalities in the state of Maranhão. Two degrees south of the equator, its territory is divided between the municipalities ofBarreirinhas with 53% of the area, municipality of Santo Amaro with 36% of the area, municipality of Primeira Cruz with 11% of the area. The park was created on June 10, 1981. Its geological age is approximately400,000 thousand years, the desert moves according to the direction of the wind, from East to West, somewhere between 10 and 50 meters per year. Its lagoons come from the rain that floods the Maranhão water table. Between May and June, some lagoons reach extremely high water levels, which causes the dune barriers to break, creating a burst of running water that heads towards the ocean, thus ending the life and beauty of some flooded regions. . The organism is ephemeral and provides us with different landscapes at different times throughout the year.

ABOUT THE LOCAL CLIMATE

Due to our proximity to the equator, around 300km to the south, we do not have a wide range of temperatures, during the day around 33° degrees, during the night around 27° degrees. It rains between January and May, strong winds between July and November. 

BEST TIME TO DO THIS TOUR

Between April and July is the ideal time to visit the primitive area of Lençóis Maranhenses, the Baixa Grande and Queimada dos Britos oases.

REASONS TO TAKE THIS TOUR

The traditional route is a low difficulty path in Lençóis Maranhenses. We recommend that beginners on the crossing do the traditional route. This crossing is contemplative, firstly, its combination of distance is a perfect use of time spent immersed.

After breakfast at 8:30 am, we started workof pick up participants at their accommodation. We embark, and the route follows the Preguiças River, with technical stops along the way before arriving in Atins.

In Atins, after lunch we continue in 4x4 to the Rio Negro lasting an hour of transfer. At 3 pm we started our trek with a 6km stretch between Rio Negro and the Baixa Grande oasis, where we spent the night and had dinner in facilities built by natives of the region.

The dispatch attends at sunset in Baixa Grande.
